my first nursing practicum

 Introduction:

Two years ago, I completed my first clinical nursing placement at the Jiquilisco National Hospital. At first, I felt a little nervous, since it was my first placement as a student in that area. I was afraid; my hands even trembled when I had to hold anything. But along with that fear, I also felt joy, because I was going to work with real people, not like at university, where we practiced in laboratories with mannequins, but with real patients.

Activity Introduction:

Upon arriving at the hospital, the nurse assigned each of us a patient, and we had to be very attentive to their care. Although I felt nervous because I didn't quite know how to write a nursing note, I learned over time. We started taking her vital signs, asking her name and age, and helping her with anything she needed. If she wanted to go to the bathroom, I accompanied her; if she needed a bedpan, I brought it to her. I was very attentive to her: if she couldn't eat, I helped her, held her plate, and gave her small portions.

Reflection:

During my placement, I learned many things. I learned that, although you feel fear at first, it disappears with time. The more you learn, the more you can help those who need your knowledge. With patience and the guidance of the staff, I gained confidence. From day one, I learned to be self-assured, to treat patients with respect, and to value the importance of empathy. Although I was very nervous that first day, I was even trembling as I entered the hospital, anxious, telling myself I couldn't do it, that I would get a bad grade, that I wouldn't pass the placement, I also learned to overcome those thoughts and keep going.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, my first clinical practice was a very rewarding experience that helped me strengthen my skills and confidence. Without a doubt, it was an important step in my training as a future nursing professional.

  1. Your experience reflects very well your first clinical practices and clearly shows the nervousness, fear, and also the excitement of starting in the hospital area. I liked it because you sincerely express your learning process and how little by little you felt more secure and confident during your practice. It shows your dedication, responsibility, and the love you have for nursing and patient care.
